Flower Care
Fresh cut flowers not only adds a smile to almost every face but they bring a color and light fragrance into our homes. Whether these flowers are purchased at the local flower shop, ordered online or cut from your own garden it seems as though their beauty fades far to soon for us to have more than a fleeting enjoyment from them. If you want your cut flowers to last longer here are some tips that might help accomplish that feat.
Flowers From Your Own Garden
When cutting flowers from your own garden it is best to cut them early in the morning before they are fully opened and the sun has a chance to begin drying them out for the day. Start by cutting the stems slightly longer than you are going to want for arranging as you are going to want to trim them once you get them indoors.
Once you get your flowers inside remove all the leaves from the part of the stem that will be covered by the water in your vase. This will help to keep bacteria from growing in your water quite as fast. Once you have stripped off the leaves run some cool water in your sink, fill the vase you plan on using half full of water and set nearby to put your flowers in after you have trimmed them.
Take each flower one at a time and keeping the end of the flower in the water you placed in your sink gently trim the stem at a 45 degree angle. Trimming the stem underwater will keep air from filling the stem and allow the flower to draw more water. As you trim each stem place in the water filled vase and place in a cool area.
Flowers last longer in areas that are slightly cooler so make sure you keep them away from any large windows or heating sources that may be on and running.
Flowers from the florist
If you receive boxed flowers from a florist they often come with little cylinders of water around each individual stem. You are going to want to take them out of these small cylinders and immediately place them in a vase of fresh water.
In order to keep your flowers as fresh as possible you are going to want to change the water daily and each time you change the water you should snip a tiny bit more of the stem off at the 45 degree angle as flower stems seal themselves.
After changing the water, lightly mist the flower part of your flowers to add moisture, clear away dust and keep them bright looking. Remove any dying flowers from your bouquet immediately as they release a gas which will speed the dying of the rest of the flowers in the bouquet.
Adding a regular non buffered Aspirin, a cap full of bleach or mixing your water with 1/3 7 up or Sprite and 2/3 water will also keep your flowers fresher longer.
Cut flowers won't last forever but, by taking care of your cut flowers you can prolong the life and beauty of your arrangement by several days giving you time to enjoy their beauty and delicate scent.
